Coaching and Mentoring
Developing your talent and potential
“I never cease to be amazed at the power of the coaching process to draw out the skills or talent that was previously hidden within an individual, and which invariably finds a way to solve a problem previously thought unsolvable.” ― John Russell, Managing Director, Harley―Davidson Europe Ltd
Google’s Oxygen project explored why some managers are better and more effective than others and one of the critical skills identified was their ability to coach. Coaching enables a culture of learning, collaboration, employee engagement and a desire to achieve. Successful organisations use coaching skills to improve performance, communication and output. Coaching capability gives individuals a powerful tool to develop their own personal performance and to elicit the best from others. By building an appreciative and developmental view of the organisation, that fits with its people, its customers and stakeholders, it is a key contributor to organisational, individual and team success.
Why Coaching and Mentoring
Working individually with you to help you delve into your strengths and weaknesses, visualise desired change and potential, your chosen coach or mentor will guide you through a series of personal conversations to enable growth and enhanced performance. In a safe space you can explore challenges and limiting beliefs and discover ways to break through these to be in a stronger and better place. Whether you need to unlock a talent, develop a new skill, find direction, discover your purpose, have better relationships or just up your game, one-to-one coaching and mentoring can reap benefits beyond your expectations.
The Difference Between Coaching and Mentoring
For SCT, Coaching is about helping an individual or group resolve specific issues. And can typically take several coaching sessions to refine and resolve that issue. A good coach will never tell you the solution, but rather, by probing and asking questions will lead you to a solution. The coach’s skill is in coaching and does not need to know the topic to be discussed. It’s often better that they don’t so they don’t make assumptions.
A mentor, on the other hand, incorporates coaching skills but also brings knowledge, gives advice and can suggest solutions. A good mentor will not do the work on your behalf (how will you learn) but will point the way.
Coaching sessions can sometimes involve an element of mentoring based on the coach’s knowledge.
A counsellor will typically help a client to go back in history to understand the reasons for various issues. SCT typically does not do this, and our coaches are experienced enough to recognise their limits, and can refer you to experts.
Coaching
Pure coaching is facilitating a process to enable the client to resolve issues. It can be one to one or with groups. Executive coaching can be about business or life. Life coaching can be about life and can include an element of business or work as well as personal issues.
Increasing in popularity to build on individual performance development, group coaching brings the conversations into a wider context that can provide invaluable feedback and new perspectives. You might be looking to grow team understanding and cohesion, or improve collaboration and sharing. Coaching in small groups and teams enables people to have critical and progressive conversations benefiting both the individuals and the group as well as having positive organisational impact.
We can mentor on topics where the coach has the knowledge of the subject in addition to the coaching skills.

Feedback from clients who have worked with SCT to develop a coaching approach
Catering & Hospitality Business Adviser : “As a professional business advisor I needed help in bordening my skill-set to include aspects of coaching and mentoring. David Rigby helped me to really understand the differences and how to apply the techniques.”
Operations Director – Insurance Business “…I was highly critical of the staff…Isla helped me to understand the reason that this was happening and why. Over the years, a pattern of only hearing negative feedback had developed; therefore this was having an impact on my perception of the workforce and company. Taking a coaching approach…created a more motivated, content workforce.”
