Ditch or Desire? Finding what behaviours and mindsets you want to have

Ditch or Desire? Finding what behaviours and mindsets you want to have

New Year New Behaviours and Mindsets

Many people look forward to the New Year for a new start on old habits”

-Anon

Everyone knows that New Year is when we rush around making decisions about what resolutions we need to make, knowing that 9 times out of 10 they won’t stick. So how about stepping up a level, looking at this from a different perspective, being creative, inspirational and a bit playful?

Ask yourself these two Big Questions:

     Big Question One

[i type=”icon-ok” color=”icon-blue” bg=””]What behaviour or mindset or way of thinking or habit would you dearly love to ditch / eliminate from your life?

     Big Question Two

[i type=”icon-ok” color=”icon-blue” bg=””]What behaviour or mindset or way of thinking or habit would you desire to have/want to invite into your life?

Have a really good think about them; think what your life will look and feel like without that behaviour or mindset; and what will it look and feel like with the new habit or way of thinking or mindset; what will it bring you to ditch the old ones and invite in the new ones; what will be better; what will be the benefits?

Years ago Volkswagen’s Fun Theory initiative looked at how to change behaviour for the better, specifically getting people to take the escalator rather than the stairs. It worked because – yes, you guessed it – people had fun!  Have a look…

Changing behaviours and mindsets

So now you’ve decided what your answers to the two Big Questions are, spend some time playing around with some possible ways of ditching the habits / behaviours / mindsets / ways of thinking that you don’t want, and developing the ones that you really desire.

Be as wacky, ingenious and creative as you want at this stage. Get a load of post it notes and write ideas on each one. Or find a big sheet and felt tip pens and draw your ideas. Or make a super complex spreadsheet if that’s your creative medium. Whatever, have fun!

The final part of this bit of creative play is picking a few of those options to start building some goals from. The subject of ‘Goals’ is another whole conversation; for here and now, stepping into 2019, when you pick a few goals, focus on the first small steps to take towards them. If you want help going further with your goals get in touch with us.

Right now, enjoy your Ditching and Desiring and remember…you’re doing your own Behaviour Change Marketing – on yourself.

ROLLS ROYCE OF NETWORKS

ROLLS ROYCE OF NETWORKS

The Rolls-Royce WomHJ at Rolls Royce Insights event with Anna Mealings HRD Defence, PPS and colleaguesen Network, which was re-launched September 2015, organise the Insight Hours.

The Insight Hours happen quarterly with the aim of providing employees with the opportunity to meet members of the leadership team. The objective of these sessions is to go beyond the general assumptions of senior management roles stepping into the personal and professional moments they bring.

“Instead of a monologue by the guest speaker, the small size of the group provides a space where ideas and experiences can be shared, providing a great opportunity to really get to know the person“, explained Patricia Patilla Sanchez, Services Solution Lead at Rolls Royce.

Patricia is instrumental in organising the Insight Hours and invited me to the first one following the network launch which took place on Wednesday 25th November 2015.

The HR Director – Defence, Anna Mealings was the key speaker and shared her story of how her career had unfolded, bringing her to Rolls-Royce. It was fascinating hearing how balancing career needs with family needs with career ambitions worked effectively.

Letting go of what seemed the job in fact created opportunities that hadn’t been considered. The insights we benefited from were many, stimulating much conversation and many questions. Staying true to who you are, being clear about boundaries and not colluding with bad behaviour all resonated with me. What a privilege it was to have been invited by Patricia to be part of this Insight Hour.

Planning of the programme in 2016 is underway with January’s speaker being the Global Head of Customer Business.

New year resolutions

How many new year resolutions have you made for 2011? If you’re anything like me, you’ll have answered ‘none’, because I know I shan’t be able to keep any of them. I know from bitter experience, it gets really hard to keep up the good work by the middle of January, and that’s exactly where our coaches can help. We’ve got one of our free drop-in sessions on Wednesday 12th January at the National Trust Cafe in Swindon and we shall be there, helping you to keep those resolutions, and maybe even helping you with others you’ve only dreamed about.
After the last drop-in session Gerry R, an independent financial advisor, said “it was good just to see how they operate. It was very laid back, but they are obviously listening…… I found that a very good experience, and clearly they are professional people …. I would recommend it. I’ve experienced it!”
