A personal Leadership Journey

A personal Leadership Journey

AT SCT we like to share the success stories of some of those we work with and come across; we love this story from Lorena Oberg, who Halina connected with under the Growth Voucher scheme.  Lorena is on Channel 4’s Bodyshockers on February 10th.  Here is her leadership journey:

Lorena Oberg laser tattoo removal “My personal road to leadership came from a place that many women are in.  Being told for years that I was “always drawing attention to myself” and that I “only ever did anything so I could get thanks” took me to a place where I was very uncomfortable getting praise and heaven forbid being the spot light.

I had to learn that it was ok to have a camera in my face and to talk about a subject that I excelled at because PEOPLE were interested in what I had to say.  I had to learn that it was ok to have celebrity clients and put them on my website.  It was years before I actually did a section on my website with my celebrity clients because I thought it was “pretentious” to do so.  I “didn’t want to toot my own horn”.

I was able to pin point this and I had media training in order to feel more comfortable in front of a camera.

I was right about ONE thing, even back then.  I thought if my work was good enough, the right people would hear about me and hear they did.  I soon began to be invited to lecture at conferences overseas. Now, I also speak in the UK at very prestigious events such as Professional Beauty.  Public speaking was not the issue for me, it was the getting praise that I had the problem with.  The whole things where people come to tell me they follow my work and ask for my autograph still, freaks me out.

I’m at a place in my journey where I’m happy to take credit for what I have achieved professionally and I have accepted that I’m a leader in my industry…ish…..  Anything I do outside of that, my charity work, I try to do it under the radar.  I don’t like it when people make a fuss over something I’ve done that really….any decent human being would do given the chance.  No one will ever find out about that side of my journey.  I prefer to be behind the scenes, quietly, no fuss, often, not even my children know.

So much of what I do is not about physical beauty but about empowering women that come see me.  There is something that children of abuse have, that sixth sense…that we just know when someone is part of our tribe.  I’ve accepted that I’m a role model to many, and I take that very seriously.  Empowering someone can be as easy as looking at them in the eye and telling them that they don’t need to be there because there is nothing wrong with them.

I’m humbled by what I do and proud that I’m one of a handful that can get real results on stretch marks and removal of permanent makeup and take my responsibility very seriously. ”

ROLLS ROYCE OF NETWORKS

ROLLS ROYCE OF NETWORKS

The Rolls-Royce Wom HJ at Rolls Royce Insights event with Anna Mealings HRD Defence, PPS and colleagues en Network, which was re-launched September 2015, organise the Insight Hours.

The Insight Hours happen quarterly with the aim of providing employees with the opportunity to meet members of the leadership team. The objective of these sessions is to go beyond the general assumptions of senior management roles stepping into the personal and professional moments they bring.

“Instead of a monologue by the guest speaker, the small size of the group provides a space where ideas and experiences can be shared, providing a great opportunity to really get to know the person“, explained Patricia Patilla Sanchez, Services Solution Lead at Rolls Royce.

Patricia is instrumental in organising the Insight Hours and invited me to the first one following the network launch which took place on Wednesday 25th November 2015.

The HR Director – Defence, Anna Mealings was the key speaker and shared her story of how her career had unfolded, bringing her to Rolls-Royce. It was fascinating hearing how balancing career needs with family needs with career ambitions worked effectively.

Letting go of what seemed the job in fact created opportunities that hadn’t been considered. The insights we benefited from were many, stimulating much conversation and many questions. Staying true to who you are, being clear about boundaries and not colluding with bad behaviour all resonated with me. What a privilege it was to have been invited by Patricia to be part of this Insight Hour.

Planning of the programme in 2016 is underway with January’s speaker being the Global Head of Customer Business.

Presenting in the right way

Presenting in the right way

This might seem like a bit of a trumpet blower, however witnessing someone presenting with provocation and challenge while being professional, empathic and inclusive is a rare thing – not to mention captivating the audience, being truly interesting, giving new ways of doing and being.  The trumpeting bit is that one of SCT’s own, Halina Jaroszewska, is very good at this as demonstrated when I shadowed her at a recent Women in Property event hosted by Thrings in Bristol.

Steve Jobs is often touted as one of the best presenters, Forbes called him the Ultimate Communicator, not relying on wordy Powerpoints, always flowing and moving in a relaxed manner, knowing his stuff and knowing his audience and being thoroughly rehearsed.

Part of presenting well is being totally ‘on brand’ with yourself and your organisation.  Whether you are a small business, a multi-national, a leader or senior executive, when in front of others you need to punch that branding message.  Hence Halina’s compelling presentation skills, being a total brand in herself and fitting this with the brand of her audience.

Contact Halina if you want to find out how she does it.

From Kenya – lessons in motivation

From Kenya – lessons in motivation

We are delighted to be able to share this article from David Brown of Peponi School in Kenya.

Tenzing “We make journeys in life for different reasons. Most are quite straightforward— we visit relatives, friends or simply go away on a relaxing break. We also learn that life is a journey. We will have ups and downs. We will understand ourselves better if we travel, the more experiences we have the wiser we will become. We will broaden our horizons, become more interesting people.

Then there are the epic journeys of the Ancient and Modern Heroic Ages: The Odyssey, The Lord of the Rings, The Journey to the Centre of the Earth, Travel to the Moon or even Mars.

Pupils at Peponi make journeys to Mount Kenya, Kilimanjaro or even the ultimate mountain Everest.

By the beginning of 2015 7,000 climbers have reached the summit of Everest. But they were inspired I would argue in particular by four men who were motivated to succeed at all costs. To climb Mount Everest was their particular journey in life. Their journeys was not to achieve financial reward. These men were adventurers. They risked their lives to achieve their personal goals. They were truly extra-ordinary.

In 1924 George Mallory and Andrew Irvine may well have been the first men to climb the World’s highest peak. These were two young, well educated men who shared a passion for Adventure.  Their motivation? When Mallory was asked by a journalist why he wanted to climb Everest? He answered laconically, ‘because it’s there!’ They were last sighted 250 metres from completing their ascent. Seventy- five years later Mallory’s body was discovered, very well preserved, face down in the snow at 27,000 feet; 2,000 feet below the summit. Mallory was descending the mountain.

Intriguingly, it had been reported that Mallory carried a photograph of his beloved wife Ruth with him which he planned to place on the summit in the event of success. It was not found among his remaining possessions. Irvine’s body has not been found. He had the camera! We will never know whether they achieved their ultimate goal. But their heroism is unquestionable.

Nearly 30 years later in 1953 a New Zealander, Edmund Hillary, and a Tibetan Sherpa, Tenzing Norgay, became the first men to successfully climb Everest. They reached the Summit but there was a problem. They had a camera but Tenzing didn’t know how to use one! Hillary commented that, with both men utterly exhausted ‘it didn’t seem the appropriate time to teach Tenzing how to take photographs’. There is only the iconic photo of Tenzing at the summit of Everest. The Sherpa later wrote ‘I motioned to Hillary that I would now take his picture but for some reason he shook his head. He did not want it’.

Can you imagine being so unassuming as to turn down the opportunity of being photographed as the man who now stood literally at the top of the World?

As equally laconic as Mallory, on gathering a warming hot drink at Base Camp from his fellow mountaineer and friend George Lowe, Hillary remarked ‘well George, we knocked the B- off ’. Like Mallory and Irvine, Hillary and Tenzing were on personal journeys to fulfil personal ambitions. Not to benefit from celebrity status. They devoted the rest of their lives to charitable causes. Mallory, Irvine, Hillary and Tenzing are iconic figures and act as a laudable legacy of a modern heroic age, where personal journeys are not about wealth and celebrity, but about praiseworthy achievement through selfless determination.

The Kardashians, Bruce Jenner and other orange people on E-News will come and go but the history books will not forget the legacy of George Mallory, Andrew Irvine, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.

Strawberries and cream

Strawberries and cream

Every picture tells a story and a picture is reputed to be worth a 1000 words.

How would you describe your perfect strawberry indulgence? Maybe strawberries are not on your yummy list. Maybe strawberries bring you out in a rash. If that is the case what would you substitute to use as a metaphor. Or maybe the imagery will work for you anyway. Suspend your disbelief and drop those strawberries in that bowl of cream….

Strawberries and cream; strawberries unwashed; strawberries washed; strawberries dipped in sugar; strawberries sprinkled with sugar, strawberries with black pepper, balsamic vinegar drizzled strawberries, strawberries sun kissed straight from the plant, strawberries dipped in dark chocolate, strawberry shortcake, strawberry jam dolloped on cream on scones, strawberry ice-cream, Eton Mess – what is your preference? Do you nibble at the strawberry or do you pull it from the stalk with your teeth or do you slice it?

What can the metaphor of strawberries, and / with, tell you? Traditional or experimenter; sweet or sharp; unvarnished or adorned – it’s all simply information.

Here’s a little exercise:

Pick one of the above list and if you were described as that, what might it tell you about your leadership, your approach to change, your image, your profile, how others see you, who you are and who you would love to be? What layers of understanding might the metaphor enable you to access? How could you stretch possibilities to access more of your potential? Then explore another one from the list, and another. Share with us  what you discover. What memories surface? What likes and dislikes?

A childhood memory of a large strawberry bed in the garden with straw cushioning the jewel like fruits each with their personal greenhouse in the shape of a jam jar so that always there was a profusion of deliciously sweet taste bombs each summer. Bliss!

For more ways to find out what your choices tell you about yourself, just contact Smart Coaching & Training and indulge in the discoveries.
